The times they are a changing – look around, all the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey. Yes, winter is coming. AGAIN! It may feel like it’s all doom and gloom, but I challenge you to think differently about this season. One of my good friends, Mary, says that Autumn is her favourite time of year and even named her daughter after the season. If you’re an avid walker like Mary, you’ll notice the world around you undertake a spectacular transformation. It’s a visual treat everywhere you look and can be a source of inspiration for those thinking about new beginnings.
Maybe Autumn is a good time for change - to start saving money, a new exercise regime, thinking about a new career, spending more quality time with your loved ones. Maybe now is a time to start reviewing your business processes so that next year you will be more efficient. Or perhaps now is a good time to stop doing things – unhelpful, unhealthy things, stop saying yes to everything and stop doing things that make you unhappy.
Sometimes small changes can make a big difference – they don’t have to be huge – yet we are still apprehensive when it comes to making changes. Why do we fear change?
Fear of the unknown and failure
Being too tired and not having time
Being overwhelmed with all that you have to do
Not knowing how to change
Once you have addressed what it is that is holding you back you can try to overcome the issue. If you’re afraid of change, find hope. If you’re tired, find time. If you are overwhelmed, then break it down into manageable chunks. And if you want to know how to change? Well, there’s some tips below!
"If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change". – Michael Jackson, Man in the Mirror
If you are ready to make a big change you need to look at yourself and identify why you want to make changes and what it is that you want to change.
Find purpose – ask yourself what you were placed on the earth for.
Be honest – ask yourself how achievable the change is and what obstacles and weaknesses might get in your way
Invest time – if you feel you aren’t fulfilling your purpose dedicate time to figuring out what actions you can take to change that.
Adapt/ Take action - don’t overface yourself and expect too much of yourself. Instead, take baby steps. A drastic action may be too much too soon and make you decide against the change (of course, this depends on the situation).
Be inspired - by others making a positive difference. Surround yourself with those that support your change, those with similar stories and those wanting to make a similar change – even if it’s with strangers, such as online support groups or other runners at your local parkrun – you’ll find it easier to make a change with the backing of others.
