I'm not into scare-mongering but there's a growing issue that's worrying me and I think that you shouldn't ignore - if you do it could be detrimental to your business. You might think 'it won't happen to me' but how can you be sure that you're one step ahead of these clever 'invisible' criminals?
Cyber-crime is an increasing risk for everybody, at home and in the office. The figures are so bad that The Crime Survey for England and Wales included cyber offences for the first time last year in its annual report with fraud being the biggest threat with an estimated 3.6 million cases. You ought to be taking your internet security and cyber-crime seriously, the government are after all, as they're intending on spending £1.9 billion over the next five years.
Think of all the hard work that everybody does in your business; are you willing to gamble all that away because you are not prepared for attack? It might take a business many years to establish its good reputation and image, but a security breach could destroy this in a matter of hours.
For many businesses, the Internet has replaced traditional paper-based ways of exchanging information; it's just a lot faster and easier. But the Internet brings many security issues which businesses must consider. Hackers are a real threat, they're like wasps that won't die and are able to:
• Gain access to sensitive data such as price lists, catalogues and valuable intellectual property, and enjoy altering, destroying or copying it
• Alter your website in order to damage your reputation or direct your customers to another site
• Gain access to financial information about your business or your customers, for the purposes of fraud
Forget the hoodies, it's these technical wizzes sat in the cafe typing away that are able to do more damage, stealing your livelihood from right under your nose!
Cyber criminals often try to gain access to a company's network through weaknesses in the system. However, your security can be breached in a number of other ways, some that you might not have considered.
System failures can be caused by something as innocent as a system update. These have been known to cause companies to shut down for many hours and resulting in huge financial losses. For example a software upgrade failure cost RBS £125m and left customers without access to their accounts for up to two weeks in June 2012. If, like ours and RBS, your business is customer facing there is a lot at risk- the whole business can come to a stand still, reputations can be damaged and there can be a huge amount of customer dissatisfaction. If our systems are down and a customer needed a piece of kit sent out that day and it hasn't gone out that relationship will be in jeopardy.
Theft is more of an obvious one really but I bet many of you reading this still don't have a lock on your phone or laptops- this leaves you open to risk of your personal data being stolen and used by the thieves. Auto-login has a lot to answer for. Online identity theft might occur without you realising- double check bank statements to ensure nothing unusual has occurred and your details haven't been used in purchasing something you didn't authorise.
The internet has rapidly become the most significant means through which viruses (and other malicious code) are spread. Chances are some of your colleagues could go on some dodgy sites in their lunchbreak and click on a link innocently only to then become a victim of a cyber-attack which can take down not just their own machine but the company's servers.
